This publication from the Decision Making series presents a collection of clinical experiences focusing on nutritional therapy and supplementation with essential amino acids and ketoanalogues in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease.

Through different clinical cases, the publication explores the role of low-protein and very-low-protein diets, the prevention of malnutrition, and the personalization of nutritional interventions according to individual patient characteristics and needs. Particular attention is given to supplementation with essential amino acids and ketoanalogues and to the monitoring of nutritional status, renal function and key metabolic parameters.

The clinical experiences cover different scenarios, ranging from conservative management of advanced kidney disease to incremental dialysis in elderly patients and the use of supplemented very-low-protein, predominantly plant-based diets in patients awaiting preemptive kidney transplantation. Overall, the collection highlights the importance of a personalized and carefully monitored nutritional approach in the management of advanced chronic kidney disease.
